A village shaped by what lies beneath
Livade is not a hilltop postcard. Its beauty is quieter: a low valley, damp woodland, old railway traces and a culinary culture built around one of Europe’s most elusive ingredients. The white truffle of Istria has made this modest village a meeting point for hunters, chefs and travellers who come for flavour rather than spectacle.
The geography explains the character. Livade sits beside the Mirna Valley and the protected Motovun Forest, while the former Parenzana railway arrives at the village after crossing tunnels and viaducts through northern Istria. It is an unusually compact base for food, cycling and slow travel.

The white truffle, in its own landscape
Treat the truffle as a fresh seasonal ingredient, not a souvenir flavour. A good visit means tasting it simply, asking about origin and season, and—if you join a hunt—choosing an experienced local guide who respects the forest and the rules governing harvesting.

When is white truffle season in Livade?
Autumn is the signature period. For 2026, the official Istrian White Truffle Days run from 5 September to 8 November, with major Livade events in October and early November.
Can I cycle the Parenzana to Livade?
Yes. The official Grožnjan–Oprtalj–Livade section is about 21 km and is mostly gravel, with tunnels and viaducts. A mountain bike is recommended.
Is Motovun Forest protected?
Yes. It has been a special forest vegetation reserve since 1963; the protected area is 275 hectares.
Is Livade worth staying overnight?
Yes if your trip centres on truffles, cycling or slow exploration of Motovun, Oprtalj and the Mirna Valley. It is less about nightlife and more about access and atmosphere.
